Frequently asked questions

How bleach proof towels work, how to wash them, which size to buy, and how ordering wholesale salon towels by the dozen works.

About Bleach Shield® towels

What are Bleach Shield® towels?

Bleach Shield® is our range of bleach resistant salon towels, hand towels and washcloths. They are VAT dyed, 100% ring-spun cotton terry towels made for hair salons, barbershops, nail salons, spas and gyms, sold by the dozen at wholesale prices and shipped from Atlanta, GA.

What makes a towel bleach resistant?

The dye, not the fiber. Bleach breaks the chemical bond of the reactive dyes used on ordinary colored towels, which is why they turn orange or blotchy. Bleach Shield® towels are VAT dyed: insoluble pigment is set inside the cotton, so bleach, peroxide and hair color cannot strip it.

What is the difference between bleach resistant, bleach proof and bleach safe towels?

They describe the same thing in salon supply: a colored towel whose color survives bleach. Bleach Shield® towels are all three. The question to ask any supplier is how the towel was dyed; only VAT dyeing holds up to daily bleach washes.

Are Bleach Shield® towels 100% cotton?

Yes. Every Bleach Shield® hand towel, salon towel and washcloth is 100% ring-spun cotton terry. No polyester blends, which means better absorbency and softness that lasts through hundreds of hot washes.

How long do bleach resistant salon towels last compared to regular towels?

Customers consistently report Bleach Shield® towels lasting three to four times longer than regular salon towels. Reactive-dyed towels are usually retired because they look faded or stained; VAT-dyed towels keep their color until the cotton itself wears out.

Who uses Bleach Shield® towels?

Hair colorists and salons (bleach, developer and hair dye), barbershops (hot towels and neck towels), nail salons and spas (acetone, oils and sanitizing), estheticians (makeup removal and facials), gyms and fitness studios (daily bleach sanitizing), tanning salons and hotels.

Why are Bleach Shield® towels dark colors only?

Dark VAT-dyed colors hide hair color, mascara, self-tanner and oils between washes while still being sanitized with bleach. The eight colors are black, charcoal, navy, purple, hunter green, burgundy, wine and dark brown. For white towels, see the wider range on TowelHub.com.

Why do my black salon towels turn orange?

Orange or rust patches are the signature of reactive-dyed towels meeting bleach or peroxide. The bleach removes the dye and exposes the natural cotton tone underneath. Switching to VAT-dyed black salon towels such as Bleach Shield® stops it; the color is set inside the fiber.

Washing and care

How do I wash bleach resistant salon towels?

Wash in hot water, or with bleach and cold water. Use a normal detergent, skip fabric softener and tumble dry on medium. Bleach Shield® towels can go through this cycle every day without fading.

Can I use bleach on colored salon towels?

On Bleach Shield® towels, yes: that is what they are made for. Use bleach with cold water for sanitizing. On ordinary colored towels, bleach will strip the color within a few washes.

How do I get hair dye out of salon towels?

On Bleach Shield® towels, wash in hot water or with bleach in cold water as soon as you can; the hair color washes out while the towel's own color stays. Pre-soaking heavily stained towels in a bleach solution for 15-30 minutes before the wash helps.

Why do salon towels stop absorbing water?

Fabric softener and dryer sheets coat the cotton loops with a waxy film. Skip both. If towels have already gone slick, wash them hot with detergent and a cup of white vinegar in the rinse to strip the residue.

How often should salon towels be replaced?

Replace towels when they thin, fray or stop absorbing, not when they discolor. Because Bleach Shield® towels do not fade, salons typically keep them in rotation three to four times longer than regular salon towels.

Do Bleach Shield® towels shrink?

Like all 100% cotton terry they tighten slightly after the first hot wash, which is why they are cut generously. Wash and dry them once before the first use.

Do new towels shed lint?

A little, for the first wash or two. One wash and dry before first use removes most of the loose fiber. After that, lint is minimal, which matters for facials and nail work.

Can I sanitize Bleach Shield® towels to state board standards?

Yes. Most state boards call for laundering with detergent and bleach, or hot water, between clients. Bleach Shield® towels take both, every day, without losing color, which is why colorists and nail techs choose them.

Sizes, weights and choosing the right towel

What size are salon towels?

The common salon towel sizes are 16x26 and 16x28 inches. Bleach Shield® comes in both, plus 13x13 washcloths. 16x28 is the plusher hair-salon towel; 16x26 is lighter and faster drying for barbershops, nail salons, spas and gyms.

Which salon towel size is best for a hair salon?

Most hair salons choose the 16x28 Bleach Shield® hand towel: long enough to wrap hair after a wash, heavy enough (3.4 lb per dozen) to feel plush, and black or charcoal to hide color. Many keep lighter 16x26 towels at the chair.

What towel weight (GSM) should a salon towel be?

Around 400-450 GSM is the sweet spot: absorbent but still quick to dry and launder. The 16x28 Bleach Shield® hand towel is about 445 GSM (3.4 lb per dozen); the 16x26 salon towel is about 394 GSM (2.8 lb per dozen).

What is the difference between the 16x28 and 16x26 towels?

Two inches of length and a noticeable difference in weight: 3.4 lb vs 2.8 lb per dozen. Choose 16x28 for a plush hair-salon towel; choose 16x26 for volume laundering in barbershops, nail salons, spas and gyms.

What are 13x13 washcloths used for in salons and spas?

Makeup removal, facials, hot towel service, nail and pedicure stations, barber hot towels and gym wipe-downs. Bleach Shield® washcloths are 1.5 lb per dozen, hemmed, and bleach safe for sanitizing between clients.

What is full terry and why does it matter?

Full terry has loops on both sides and no flat woven band, so the whole towel absorbs. Bleach Shield® hand and salon towels are full terry with a tuck-in selvedge edge that resists fraying through commercial laundry.

How many towels does a salon need?

A common rule is 6-8 towels per stylist per day, times the days between laundry runs. A four-chair salon washing every other day usually starts with 5-6 dozen 16x28 towels plus a few dozen washcloths, then reorders by the dozen.

Are Bleach Shield® towels good gym towels?

Yes. The 16x26 is the classic front-desk gym towel and the 13x13 the sweat towel; both can be bleach-sanitized daily without fading, so gyms keep a consistent dark color across the floor.
